Martha Salon is a photo book, an abstraction from six thematic digital publications that have been published regularly by SOKONG! in 2019-2020 ((#10 Wakil-Wakil, #11 Abu-Abu, #12 CLR, #13 Homemade, #14 Refleksi, #15 Hikayat Benda). SOKONG! invited Ika Vantiani – an artist, curator, and crafter – to be a guest editor who has the right to de-/recontextualize a total of 367 photos from 69 contributors from various regions in Indonesia who entered through the open call for digital publications SOKONG!.

Ika Vantiani chose “Martha Salon” as the title because she applied the concept of a make-over in the salon in her editing practices. In addition to selecting and compiling photos and texts from contributors, Ika also includes her old photo collections. Then Ika collaged all the materials and built a ‘conversation’ from two different periods.

What’s the point of going to a salon if nothing changes a bit?
